3 tips for better CTAs

Whether you know it or not, you see Calls to Action (CTAs) all the time. These can be buttons or links prompting you to buy something or to simply go to another page. Great CTAs are critical for keeping folks engaged and helping your users take the next step on a journey with you. 

As someone with over 10 years of experience crafting great content experiences, here are some of my favorite tricks for better CTAs. 

Make it action oriented

99% of the time, I encourage folks to start with a verb. You want to prompt someone to take action now. If you’re struggling to write, take a minute to ask yourself this— what action do you want people to take? Simply write out the sentence "We want users to [insert action here].

Maybe you want users to download an ebook. Play around with different versions of that. Download the ebook. Get the ebook. Claim the ebook. You can use these different versions for an a/b test or simply choose one that feels most compelling.

Instead of: “A free TikTok guide”
Try: “Claim your free guide on TikTok”

Be specific and clear

We’ve all seen the vague ‘Learn Mores’. People don’t want secrecy when it comes to a CTA. They want to better understand what will happen next. Will they be looking at plans and pricing? Or will they be asked to set up a 30 minute call? The more specific you can be, the more you set your visitors at ease. When users feel confident about the action, they’re more likely to take the next step.

Instead of: “See More”
Try: “Discover how you can write better headers”

Emphasize the value

At the end of the day, what will your customer get out of this? Why should they spend their time or money here, with you? Maybe you’re giving them a discount, but only for the next 48 hours.Perhaps there’s something unique they can only learn from you. Frame it as a benefit to help seal the deal. Focus not just on what you’re giving, but what your customers will get out of it.

This is where customer feedback and testimonials can be a gold mine. Look at how they talk about your product and service and see if you can reflect that language. You could use it at as a testimonial quote or use similar wording to describe the value of your offering.

Instead of: “Contact us for a plan”
Try: Get your personalized plan today”

Writing great calls to action can take time. If you have the ability, a/b testing can be a huge asset in finding the words that resonate. By setting clear and compelling offers, you’ll find more engagement and better conversion rates.
